Our journey began in 1958 on Sugar Island, Newry, where Godfrey McWhirter and his wife Muriel founded the business. Built on hard work, trust, and a deep connection to the local community, they established a strong foundation that would shape everything to come.
As the business grew, a move was made in 1966 to 108 Hill Street. This new premises allowed the business to expand further while continuing to build strong relationships with customers and the wider community.
In 1983, the business expanded once again with a move into Sugar Island Arcade. During this exciting period of growth, their son Garry McWhirter joined the business, continuing the family tradition and bringing fresh energy into the next chapter.
In 1992, the business moved to Margaret Street, where it remained for nearly 30 years. This became a defining era of expansion and renovation, as the business continued to grow and evolve. In 1994, Carol McWhirter, Garry’s wife, joined the business, further strengthening the family involvement. The next generation followed in time, with Lee joining in 2004 at just 15 years old, and Ross joining in 2006 at 16 years old — both carrying the family legacy forward.
In 2021, the business moved to its current location at 64 Hill Street, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its long history. Today, the business proudly operates with a team of 10 — the largest team in its history — reflecting continued growth and success while staying true to its family roots.
Continuing that tradition, in 2025, Ross’s daughter Chloe joined the business as a goldsmith trainee, representing the next generation stepping into the future.
